Overview

Grise Fiord is Canada’s most northerly community.  Nestled amongst majestic mountains and located at the end of a stunning Fiord, Grise Fiord’s sheer beauty masks a history rooted in hardship and perseverance.

The inhabitants of Grise Fiord, like their neighbours in Resolute, were relocated from Northern Quebec as a part of the Canadian Government’s sovereignty policy in 1953.  Increased high arctic activity by the Russians and Americans threatened Canada’s legal claims to the area.  Greenlandic Inuit hunters often would cross over to the area to hunt Polar Bear.  In response, the Government relocated several Inuit families from Northern Quebec to the area. These families had no experience in the harsh high arctic climate and were forced to adapt quickly to the dark cold nights.

And adapt they did.  Today Grise Fiord is home to some of the finest hunters who are skilled at hunting in the dark or on the water during the short summer.  Today, residents earn their living through tourism, hunting and arts and crafts.  Grise Fiord is the closest community to Quttinirpaaq National Park- Canada’s second largest and most northern National Park.  The Nirjutiqavvik National Wildlife Area is also located nearby.

"Working in the Arcrtic is our passion and has defined who we are for many years. We pride ourselves in our knowledge of the most remote areas and harshest environments. We have supported the Canadian government's scientific research out of our Resolute Bay location for many years. Working with our joint ventures, Aklak Air and Unaalik Aviation, we provide charter flights across the Canadian north in whatever capacity required."
