Overview

Rankin Inlet is the hub of the Kivalliq region.  With extensive air links to Southern Canada and throughout Nunavut, Rankin Inlet is the centre of commerce in Nunavut.

The Rankin Inlet area has long been an important hunting and fishing location for nomadic Inuit.  Nearby archeological sites show near continuous occupation since 500 BC. Inuit and Europeans have had contact in the area since the 1600’s, with regular Hudson’s Bay Company trading taking place throughout the region.

Marble Island, located 32 kms from Rankin Inlet, was an overwintering spot for European whalers.  The island, which is steeped in local legend is entirely made of white quartzite rock.  The remains of whaling ships, houses, theatres and graves can still be found here.

The community itself, however, was not formed until 1957 with the opening of the North Rankin Nickle Mine.  The mine was a first for Nunavut, and Rankin Inlet is the only community in the territory started by industrial activity.  The mine remained open for only five years, closing in 1962.

Rankin Inlet has developed into an important government and logistical centre.  Extensive mineral exploration takes place in the area and there may be a gold mine built 16 kms from town.
