Overview

Arviat is located in the southern Kivalliq region, not far from the Manitoba border.  Currently one of Nunavut’s fastest growing communities, modern Arviat has its roots in the 1920’s with the establishment of the Hudson’s Bay Post, quickly followed by the Roman Catholic and Anglican Churches.

Arviat grew significantly in the 1950s, stemming tragedy of the massive famines affecting the Ihalmiut Inuit in the Kivalliq region.  In 1957, the Government of Canada used Arviat as a centre to provide victims of the famine with support, after two other failed relocation attempts.  The plight of the Ihalmiut are controversially chronicled in Farley Mowat’s famous book “The People of the Deer”.

In recent years, Arviat has become known for its abundance of wildlife viewing opportunities.  As the closest community north of Churchill, Arviat has significant numbers of Polar Bears in and around the community during the fall season.  In addition, the nearby McConnell River Bird Sanctuary is a nesting spot for  geese, swans, loons, snowy owls, peregrine falcons and gyr falcons.  Arviat is also the closest communities to Qamanirjuaq caribou herds, estimated at nearly 350,000 animals.  Incredible numbers of beluga whales also populate the nearby waters in the summer and fall.

Today, Arviat’s economy is largely driven the Government of Nunavut, which has based several decentralized offices in the community.  In addition, significant mineral exploration takes place in the area, providing valuable income to the community.

Arts and Crafts plays a major role in both the economic and cultural fabric of Arviat.  Home to many famous carvers and artists.

Arviat’s landscape consists of flat, rolling tundra and, in the summertime, the beautiful blue waters of the Hudson’s Bay.

Overall, Arviat has excellent infrastructure by Nunavut standards.  Hotels, restaurants, stores and vehicle rentals are all available.
